Invitation to Participate in Southern Cross Cannonball Classic- May 2025
Darwin, NT (9th May) 2025 to Victor Harbor, SA (22nd May) 2025
Thank you for your patience waiting for information related to this event.
As you have expressed your Interest in The Event, this letter invites your deposit of $500- to apply for your position on the starting line, pending approval and subject to The Guidelines, followed by another $2,000-, six months before the start. This totals $2,500- for the event, not including accommodation along with yours and your support vehicle costs, borne by the riders and teams. PLEASE NOTE that Deposits are accepted on a first come, first served basis, with The Committee reserving the right to cap the numbers once a safe field has been reached. A position on The Start Line CANNOT be held without the Deposit and Balance having first being paid and accepted. NOTE: participation in the last event “Indian Pacific Cannonball Classic” is not a guarantee of being accepted into this event. Although priority consideration MAY be given to members of our Australian Cannonball family where possible. All riders have to commit to “The Guidelines” in full, which have been upgraded for SCCC. Safety is our highest priority and this especially applies to separating support vehicles from the riders, by the prescribed time, leaving no less than 1.5 Hours after the last competing Motorcycle leaves the start line each day. This is paramount to gain acceptance into the event. Participants must also behave at all times in a way that promotes and showcases our sport to the public, by following all road rules and acceptable social norms.
The breakdown of costs, generally, are:
•
Functions, being at Darwin NT, Ayres Rock Resort (Uluru Area NT) & Victor Harbor SA (Finish of Event). These functions going ahead, are subject to good weather.
•
A donation to our charity of choice – Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Riders can make additional donations via sponsorship if they wish.
•
Merchandise pack
•
Race Number Plates
•
Accessory Led lights to be supplied for safety, and must be mounted to front and rear of bikes and turned on whilst running in the event (an event requirement)
•
Class trophies
•
Costs to research, map and pre drive the event (work well in progress)
•
Costs related to running the Event
This is not a cheap Event for competitors, (made more expensive due to remote locations and increased costs since IPCC). but it is unique and a massive challenge to get 1948 and earlier (pre-1949) motorcycles, across our land from the shores of The Timor Sea (in this case Darwin) to the shores of Great Southern Ocean (in this case Victor Harbor). Comparable Trans Continental events in other parts of the world are far more expensive than this event.
This is not a race, and not a win at all costs event ! It is planned to bring riders from all eligible marques from 1948 and earlier, together for a mutual personal challenge. There are rules and regulations in “The Guidelines” attached along with other information in this invitation. Further information will be forwarded when required over the lead up to the SCCC.
We visit a number of unique locations along the way, with a Start/ Finish line and time penalties every day. The exact dates and locations we plan to stay during the Event, will be advised to Accepted Entrants approximately 12 months out from the event.
Please don’t try to book locations yet, as some are specific sites and others will have a choice of accommodation. You will notice we have not specified sites yet. This is because we want to give every accepted registered rider the best chance possible, to get a bed and not have to camp in accommodation with limited locations. It is however very highly likely at least in a few locations you will need to camp as we are in The Outback.
We will release to all deposited and accepted riders an information pack, which specifies exact locations closer to the event. Then it’s first, in best dressed for all accommodations. This also spreads out one’s costs related to the event. Riders late to register can do so, as long as our Event cap has not been exceeded.
The exception to this is Ayres Rock Resort. Once riders have deposited, we will send the dates to this site which includes the lay day. As this is a busy time for Grey Nomads and Conferences, during the cooler months. It is strongly advised you book these 2 nights’ accommodation ASAP. A code will be provided to deposited accepted riders which they can use to receive an Ayres Rock Resort discount. Those who plan to camp, also need to book as there is no free camping in the area. We recommend at this site you consider staying at the proper available accommodations, so you have a good refreshing 2 days off with all the amenities available to you.
Ayres Rock Resort also has an Airport with major Airlines from most States, flying in & out on a daily basis. As we have a lay day and a function on one of the nights, we highly recommend you consider flying in your partner, for a few days to participate in the function (at an extra function partner charge) and your day off. The area is amazing and getting up close to the Rock or Kuta Juta (The Olgas) on your lay day is a must.
Remember this is an event that requires you to have a support crew with a trailer spot, for every bike, and a seat for every rider, in the event of break downs (of which I am sure there will be a few) so no bike or rider is left behind. How you achieve this, is up to you (wife / partner following with ute, multi vehicle trailers etc) Make sure you get this right, as if you arrive at scrutineering on 8th May ‘25 and can’t demonstrate your eligibility pursuant to The Guidelines, you are not allowed to participate in the Event. We recommend you arrive in Darwin a number of days before the event, so you have time to rest and get organised. The 8th May, ‘25 the day before the event, will be busy with Registration, Scrutineering, rider briefing & the first function of the event on that evening of the 8th May, ‘25.
Scrutineering will be conducted the days prior to The Start, and/or at random intervals, or at The Committee’s discretion, during the Event. This will allow the checking of Compliance and Registration, and therefore, the eligibility of riders and bikes in various classes. The Motorcycles must be registered and roadworthy with working Horn, lights, brakes, speedo, fresh tyres etc. This is not a full engineering check and riders are responsible for the legality and safety of their vehicle. However, should our scrutineers notice, for example, non-compliance with The Guidelines, frame cracks or other obvious flaws in the bike’s safety, the vehicle will be ordered to it’s trailer, or disqualified from entering, until, or unless, the Motor Cycle has been acceptably rectified.
